Question 1

What should I know about the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine?

Accepted Answer

The three-cylinder 1.0 EcoBoost is lively and economical, but its timing belt runs in oil and must be replaced at the interval Ford sets. Early engines also suffered coolant-related failures, so look for a steady temperature gauge and no coolant loss.

Question 2

Is Ford's PowerShift automatic reliable?

Accepted Answer

The dry dual-clutch PowerShift fitted to the Fiesta, Focus and other Fords in the early 2010s is known for judder and hesitation when pulling away. Drive the car in slow traffic and on a slope, and ask whether software updates or clutch work have been done. The problem concerns that gearbox, not every Ford automatic.

Question 3

What should I check on a Ford Kuga plug-in hybrid?

Accepted Answer

Early Kuga plug-in hybrids were recalled over battery cells that could overheat, so confirm with a Ford dealer that the work has been carried out. Check too that the car charges properly and that the electric range shown after a full charge is sensible.

Question 4

Ford Puma or Fiesta?

Accepted Answer

The Puma is a small crossover built on Fiesta underpinnings, with a higher seat and a larger boot that includes a deep, washable well under the floor. Most use the 1.0 EcoBoost with a 48-volt mild hybrid. The Fiesta is lighter and usually costs less at the same age.
