Question 1

Which Ford automatics need the most care?

Accepted Answer

Early dry-clutch Powershift gearboxes in petrol Fiesta and Focus models are known for juddering and hesitation when pulling away. Ask whether the clutch or the gearbox software has been replaced or updated, and test the car in slow traffic.

Question 2

What kind of automatic does a Ford Kuga hybrid use?

Accepted Answer

The Kuga hybrid and plug-in hybrid use a continuously variable transmission paired with an electric motor, with no conventional gears to shift. It is smooth in traffic, though the engine can sound strained under hard acceleration.

Question 3

How do I tell which gearbox a Ford has?

Accepted Answer

The model, year and engine decide it. The service history, or a Ford dealer working from the VIN, can confirm exactly which transmission is fitted.

Question 4

Do Ford automatic gearboxes need servicing?

Accepted Answer

Some Ford automatics are described as filled for life, but fluid changes at sensible intervals extend the life of torque-converter and wet-clutch boxes. Receipts for gearbox oil changes are a good sign on a car with high mileage.
