Question 1

Is a diesel Ford still sensible for commuting from Porto?

Accepted Answer

On regular motorway runs a TDCi or EcoBlue is economical and keeps its particulate filter healthy. Mostly short trips in town clog that filter, and every diesel pays an additional IUC charge, so a petrol EcoBoost may suit city drivers better.

Question 2

What should I check on a used Ford Ranger?

Accepted Answer

Look at the load bed, the towbar and the underside for signs of farm or building work, and on a 4x4 version engage the four-wheel drive during the test drive. Many Rangers are registered as light goods vehicles, which follow a different IPO calendar from passenger cars, so check the category on the registration certificate.

Question 3

What does Porto's coast do to a Ford?

Accepted Answer

Salt air in Matosinhos, Vila do Conde or Póvoa de Varzim speeds up corrosion of the brake discs, exhaust and underbody. Look underneath and along the bottoms of the doors and tailgate, especially on older Fiestas, Focuses and vans.

Question 4

What is the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost's known weak point?

Accepted Answer

Its timing belt runs in oil and must be checked and changed at Ford's interval; a worn belt can shed debris into the oil system. Early engines also had cooling problems, so ask for the service record and check that the coolant level holds.
