Question 1

Which BMW diesels have a known weak point?

Accepted Answer

The N47 four-cylinder diesel fitted from around 2007 to 2011, in cars such as the 118d, 320d and 520d, is known for timing-chain wear. A rattle from the gearbox end of the engine is the warning sign, and because the chain sits there, the repair is costly.

Question 2

What should I ask about an imported BMW?

Accepted Answer

Ask whether the price includes ISV and Portuguese registration or whether you will pay them yourself. Compare the mileage with the electronic service record, which a BMW workshop can read from the car.

Question 3

Does a diesel BMW cost more in IUC?

Accepted Answer

Yes: diesel passenger cars pay an additional IUC charge on top of the amount set by engine size and CO2. A plug-in hybrid usually pays less thanks to its low official CO2, and the electric i models pay none.

Question 4

Is xDrive worth having on a BMW?

Accepted Answer

Rear-wheel drive is enough for most Portuguese roads, while xDrive helps on wet mountain roads, in winter in the interior or when towing. It adds weight and a transfer case, so listen for knocking or binding on tight, slow turns.
