Question 1

What should I check on a car kept near the Ria de Aveiro?

Accepted Answer

Humid, salty air around the lagoon and the coast speeds up rust. Look at the underbody, brake discs, exhaust and door bottoms, and check the cabin and boot for damp.

Question 2

Is an electric car practical in Aveiro?

Accepted Answer

The city is flat and compact, which suits an electric car or a hybrid well. Check the battery's state of health, the charging cable supplied and whether you can charge at home or nearby.

Question 3

How is ownership transferred for a car bought in Aveiro?

Accepted Answer

The transfer is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, the national register, online or at any registry office, so it works the same anywhere in Portugal. From then on the new owner pays the annual IUC, due in the month the car was first registered.

Question 4

How do I know a car for sale in Aveiro has no outstanding finance?

Accepted Answer

Ask for a certificate from the Registo Automóvel, which shows any reserva de propriedade in favour of a lender and any other charges. Until the lender cancels it, the car cannot pass cleanly into your name.
