Question 1

What is the difference between sDrive and xDrive on a BMW SUV?

Accepted Answer

sDrive models drive one axle only, which makes them lighter and usually more economical. xDrive is BMW's all-wheel drive, worth having for wet mountain roads, towing or unmade tracks.

Question 2

Is a used BMW plug-in hybrid SUV worth it?

Accepted Answer

Only if you can charge it regularly, since an X3 xDrive30e or X5 xDrive45e driven on petrol alone is heavy and thirsty. Ask about the remaining battery warranty; an imported plug-in can pay reduced ISV when it meets the legal thresholds for electric range and emissions.

Question 3

What should I check on an older BMW xDrive SUV?

Accepted Answer

Drive slowly in tight circles: judder, clunks or a warning light can point to wear in the transfer case. Mismatched tyre sizes or uneven wear across the axles strain the system, so check that all four tyres match.

Question 4

Do electric BMW SUVs pay IUC?

Accepted Answer

No. Fully electric cars such as the iX1, iX3 and iX are exempt from IUC in Portugal and pay no ISV when imported. Plug-in hybrids and combustion models do pay the annual tax.
