Question 1

What should I check on an older BMW diesel?

Accepted Answer

On four-cylinder diesels of the N47 engine family, a rattle at cold start is a known sign of timing chain wear. Ask whether the chain has already been replaced and see the invoice.

Question 2

How is ownership of a BMW bought in Porto transferred?

Accepted Answer

Buyer and seller sign the registration request, and the change of owner is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, online or at a conservatória. From then on the new owner pays the annual IUC road tax.

Question 3

Dealer or private seller for a BMW in Porto?

Accepted Answer

A dealer gives the legal guarantee and usually handles the registration. A private sale is often cheaper, but the checks and paperwork fall to you, so make sure the periodic inspection, the IPO, is still valid.

Question 4

Does a plug-in hybrid BMW make sense around Porto?

Accepted Answer

If you can charge at home or at work, short trips in the city run largely on electricity. Without charging, the petrol engine carries the extra weight of the battery. Check that the charging cable comes with the car.
