Question 1

Can an older BMW drive into central Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

Lisbon's low-emission zone, covering the Avenida da Liberdade, Baixa and Chiado area, restricts cars below a minimum emissions standard. Check the city council's current rules against the car's registration date before counting on daily access.

Question 2

Is a diesel BMW a good choice for Lisbon driving?

Accepted Answer

A diesel suits a motorway commute into the city, but repeated short trips in traffic can clog its particulate filter. For mostly urban use, a petrol or plug-in hybrid version is usually easier to live with.

Question 3

How is ownership transferred after buying a BMW in Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

The change of owner is registered at the Registo Automóvel, online or at a counter, after which the new owner pays the IUC each year. If the car is old enough to need it, ask for a valid IPO inspection certificate.

Question 4

Should I worry about an imported BMW?

Accepted Answer

Many used BMWs in Portugal were brought in from other EU countries. Check that the car already carries Portuguese plates, or that the ISV is included in the price, since it can add a large sum.
