Question 1

Should I choose a Yaris hybrid or a petrol one?

Accepted Answer

The hybrid is at its best in town, where it runs on electric power at low speed and its automatic transmission makes stop-start traffic easy. A petrol manual costs less to buy and suits a driver who mostly covers open-road kilometres.

Question 2

How do I check the battery on a used Yaris hybrid?

Accepted Answer

Ask for a hybrid system check at a Toyota workshop, which reads the battery's condition, and for the service record. Servicing in the Toyota network can also count towards the extended hybrid cover the brand offers.

Question 3

What should I know about older automatic Yaris models?

Accepted Answer

Earlier petrol automatics use the MultiMode gearbox, a robotised manual rather than a true automatic, so a pause between gears is normal. On a test drive, check that it pulls away smoothly and does not hesitate or jerk in traffic.

Question 4

How are the IUC and ISV worked out for a Yaris?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered from July 2007, the annual IUC depends on engine size and CO2 emissions, so a low-emission hybrid pays little. A Yaris imported from abroad pays ISV when it is registered in Portugal, calculated on the same two factors with a reduction for the car's age.
