Question 1

Which Polo engine should I choose?

Accepted Answer

The 1.0 MPI without a turbo is simple and cheap to run but feels slow on motorways. The 1.0 TSI turbo petrol is the better all-rounder, and TDI diesels make sense mainly for drivers who cover long distances.

Question 2

What are the known problems on a used Polo?

Accepted Answer

Early 1.2 TSI engines in the fifth generation can suffer timing chain stretch, heard as a rattle on cold start. Cars with the seven-speed DSG should shift smoothly, without judder, in slow traffic.

Question 3

Is the Polo big enough for a small family?

Accepted Answer

It seats four adults comfortably for short trips, and the latest generation has noticeably more cabin and boot space than earlier ones. Families needing more room often look at the Golf, which shares much of its technology.

Question 4

Is a Polo cheap to own in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Its small engines keep IUC low, since on cars registered since July 2007 the tax depends on engine size and CO2. Parts and servicing are easy to find because Volkswagen Group models are so common in Portugal.
