Question 1

Which Audi A4 gearbox should I avoid?

Accepted Answer

The multitronic CVT fitted to front-wheel-drive versions up to the B8 generation has the poorest reliability record and is expensive to repair. The S tronic dual-clutch and the tiptronic automatic on quattro versions are generally safer automatic choices, given regular oil changes.

Question 2

Did the Audi A4 have engine problems?

Accepted Answer

Early 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI petrol engines of the B8 era are known for high oil consumption, so ask how much oil the car uses between services. Many 2.0 TDI diesels of the same period were part of the emissions recall, and it is worth checking that the software update was done.

Question 3

Is the Audi A4 still made?

Accepted Answer

No. From 2024 Audi gave the A4's successor the A5 name, so the B9 is the last A4 generation. Parts and servicing for the A4 remain easy to find.

Question 4

What does an imported Audi A4 cost to register in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

A used A4 brought from another EU country pays ISV, calculated on engine capacity and CO2 emissions with a reduction for age, and diesels pay more than petrols. Once registered, it pays IUC every year.
