Question 1

Which Renault Clio generation should I look at?

Accepted Answer

The third generation (2005–2012) is the budget choice, the fourth (2012–2019) is the most common and also came as the Sport Tourer estate, and the fifth (from 2019) brings a more modern cabin and the E-Tech hybrid.

Question 2

Is the Clio E-Tech hybrid worth it?

Accepted Answer

The full hybrid pulls away on electric power and switches between electric and petrol by itself, through an unusual multi-mode gearbox with no clutch pedal. It is at its best in town traffic; on long motorway runs its advantage over the TCe petrol shrinks.

Question 3

What should I check on a diesel Clio?

Accepted Answer

The 1.5 dCi needs its oil changed on schedule, because neglect can damage the crankshaft bearings, so ask for dated service records. Diesels also pay an extra charge on top of the IUC in Portugal, which eats into their saving if you drive little.

Question 4

Is an LPG Clio a good idea?

Accepted Answer

Factory LPG versions, such as the fifth generation's ECO-G, run on both LPG and petrol and keep the tank in the spare-wheel well. A car converted later must have the conversion approved and recorded on its registration document, so check that before buying.
