Question 1

Which BMW X1 generation should I choose?

Accepted Answer

The first X1, built from 2009 to 2015, is based on the 3 Series of its time and drives the rear or all four wheels. The second, from 2015, moved to a front-wheel-drive platform with more cabin and boot space, and the third, from 2022, added the iX1 and a more digital cabin.

Question 2

Do BMW X1 diesels have a known weak point?

Accepted Answer

The N47 four-cylinder diesel in early first-generation X1s, such as the 18d and 20d from around 2009 to 2011, is known for timing-chain wear. A rattle from the back of the engine is the warning sign, and the repair is costly because the chain sits at the gearbox end.

Question 3

Why do some BMW X1s ride so firmly?

Accepted Answer

Many X1s left the factory on run-flat tyres and without a spare wheel, which firms up the ride and makes replacement tyres dearer. Check which tyres are fitted and, if they are ordinary ones, whether the car carries a repair kit.

Question 4

What about the BMW X1 plug-in hybrid and the iX1?

Accepted Answer

The plug-in hybrid X1 pays much less IUC thanks to its low official CO2, and the electric iX1 pays none, nor ISV on import. On both, check the charging cables and ask how long BMW's high-voltage battery warranty still runs.
