Question 1

Is it cheaper to buy a car in Spain and bring it to Bragança?

Accepted Answer

The asking price is sometimes lower, but an imported car pays ISV and needs Portuguese registration before it can run on local plates. Work out the full cost, including ISV and paperwork, before comparing it with a car already registered in Portugal.

Question 2

Do I need all-wheel drive in Bragança?

Accepted Answer

Not for most everyday driving, but it helps on rural and mountain roads when snow or ice settles in winter. For most drivers, good tyres in proper condition matter more than the drive system.

Question 3

Living in Bragança, can I buy from a seller in Porto or Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The change of ownership is registered at the Registo Automóvel, online or at a service counter, so the seller's location does not complicate the paperwork. The IUC and IPO rules are the same across the country.

Question 4

What should I ask about the IPO when buying a car in Bragança?

Accepted Answer

Ask for the latest inspection report, which lists any faults noted even when the car passed. On a car that has been through mountain winters, it is a quick way to judge the brakes, suspension and underbody.
