Question 1

Saloon or Avant: which Audi A6 should I buy?

Accepted Answer

The Avant is the estate, with a longer roof and a larger, squarer boot, and it is the favourite with families. The saloon is a little quieter and usually cheaper for the same engine and age.

Question 2

Are there Audi A6 gearbox problems to watch for?

Accepted Answer

Older front-wheel-drive A6s used the multitronic CVT, which can judder or slip when worn, so a long test drive matters. Later cars use the S tronic dual-clutch or, on the bigger engines, a tiptronic torque-converter automatic, and both want their oil changes on schedule.

Question 3

Is a plug-in hybrid Audi A6 worth it?

Accepted Answer

The TFSI e suits drivers who can charge at home or at work and do short daily trips on electricity. Driven mostly on long motorway runs with a flat battery, it uses more fuel than a TDI.

Question 4

What should I check on an imported Audi A6?

Accepted Answer

Many A6s on the Portuguese market came from Germany and other EU countries. Make sure the ISV was paid, the car is registered at the Registo Automóvel under Portuguese plates and the mileage matches its service records abroad.

Question 5

How much IUC does an Audi A6 pay?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered since July 2007, the IUC depends on cylinder capacity and CO2 emissions, so a 2.0 TDI pays notably less than a 3.0 V6. Diesels also carry an extra IUC charge, so compare the exact figure for each car.
