Is the BMW X1 dual-clutch gearbox reliable?

The seven-speed dual-clutch in the F48 and U11 is generally sound, but it can feel jerky at walking pace. On the test drive, check for smooth starts and for hesitation when manoeuvring.

Which gearbox does the BMW X1 E84 automatic use?

Early E84s use a six-speed ZF automatic; from the 2012 facelift most engines came with the eight-speed ZF. Both are torque-converter automatics with a good record when the fluid has been changed.

Does the BMW X1 plug-in hybrid have an automatic gearbox?

Yes. The F48 xDrive25e and the U11 plug-in hybrids are automatic only, with an electric motor driving the rear wheels.
