What problems does the BMW X1 E84 diesel have?

The N47 2.0 diesel in the E84 can suffer timing chain wear, heard as a rattle from the back of the engine; early engines are the most affected. Check the particulate filter and the EGR valve too.

Is the BMW X1 sDrive front- or rear-wheel drive?

It depends on the generation: on the E84, sDrive means rear-wheel drive, while on the F48 and U11 it means front-wheel drive. xDrive is all-wheel drive in every generation.

Is the BMW X1 16d three-cylinder engine any good?

The F48 sDrive16d uses a 1.5 three-cylinder diesel that is frugal and adequate around town, but it feels stretched when the car is loaded. The 18d and 20d four-cylinders suit motorway driving better.
