Question 1

Which Porsche 911 generations have the IMS bearing problem?

Accepted Answer

The intermediate shaft bearing is a known weak point of the M96 and M97 engines in the 996 and the 997 built until 2008. Many cars have had an upgraded bearing fitted, so ask for the invoice; engines from the 2009 997 facelift onwards have no such bearing, and Turbo and GT3 models with the Mezger engine are not affected.

Question 2

Why does an imported Porsche 911 cost so much to register in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

ISV is calculated from engine displacement and CO2 emissions, and a large six-cylinder scores high on both, even after the reduction for the car's age. Work out the amount with the ISV simulator on the Portal das Finanças before committing to a car abroad.

Question 3

What is the difference between manual, Tiptronic and PDK on the Porsche 911?

Accepted Answer

Tiptronic is the torque-converter automatic used from the 964 to the early 997; PDK, a dual-clutch gearbox, replaced it from 2008 and shifts faster and more efficiently. Manual cars are especially sought after by enthusiasts.

Question 4

Can a used 911 come with a Porsche Approved warranty?

Accepted Answer

Porsche Centres in Portugal sell used 911s under the Porsche Approved programme, which includes a warranty and an inspection. A privately bought car within the programme's age and mileage limits can often be added after an inspection at a Porsche Centre.
