Question 1

What should I know about the Peugeot 308's 1.6 THP petrol engine?

Accepted Answer

The 1.6 THP, fitted mainly to the first-generation 308, is known for timing chain stretch, heard as a rattle on cold starts, and for carbon build-up on the valves. Ask for invoices showing chain work and regular oil changes. A car that has already had its chain kit replaced is the safer buy.

Question 2

Does the Peugeot 308's i-Cockpit suit every driver?

Accepted Answer

From the second generation on, the 308 has a small steering wheel with the instruments read above it rather than through it. Some drivers find the rim hides part of the dials, depending on their height and seat position. A test drive settles it quickly.

Question 3

Is the Peugeot 308 SW worth choosing over the hatchback?

Accepted Answer

The SW has a longer body and a much larger boot. On the third generation it comes with the same choice of power as the hatchback: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric. Check the rear suspension and boot floor for signs of heavy loads.

Question 4

What should I check on a Peugeot 308 GTi?

Accepted Answer

The second-generation 308 GTi uses a 1.6 THP with up to 270 hp and, on the more powerful versions, a Torsen limited-slip differential. Check the clutch, tyres and brakes, which work hard on such cars, and ask whether it has been used on track. Its fiscal horsepower makes the carte grise dearer than for a standard 308.
