Question 1

What documents come with a used car sold in France?

Accepted Answer

The seller hands over the carte grise crossed out and signed, a certificat de cession and a certificat de situation administrative showing the car is free of any lien. For a car over four years old, a contrôle technique report less than six months old is also required.

Question 2

How do I register a used car in my name in France?

Accepted Answer

The new registration is requested online through the ANTS within one month of the purchase. The fee depends on the region and the car's fiscal horsepower, and a provisional certificate lets you drive while the new carte grise is posted.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker will a used car get?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the fuel and the Euro emissions standard on the carte grise: electric cars get the green sticker, recent petrol and hybrid cars Crit'Air 1 and recent diesels Crit'Air 2. Older vehicles get higher numbers and may be barred from some low-emission zones.

Question 4

Is buying from a dealer different from buying privately?

Accepted Answer

A dealer owes the legal guarantee of conformity and often adds its own warranty. A private seller is bound only by the guarantee against hidden defects, but must supply the same transfer documents.
