Question 1

Can I buy a used car in Germany and register it in the Bas-Rhin?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A car bought in Germany needs a certificate of conformity, a quitus fiscal from the tax office and an application to the ANTS before it can get a French carte grise. Allow time and money for the paperwork.

Question 2

Does the Crit'Air sticker matter in Strasbourg and the Bas-Rhin?

Accepted Answer

Yes, once you drive into the Eurométropole. Its low-emission zone and pollution-peak restrictions are set by Crit'Air class, and older diesels are the first to be kept out. The class follows from the fuel and Euro standard on the carte grise.

Question 3

Are winter tyres required in the Bas-Rhin?

Accepted Answer

In the Vosges communes covered by the loi Montagne, cars must have winter tyres or carry chains or snow socks from 1 November to 31 March. Ask whether a set of winter wheels comes with the car, and look underneath for rust left by salted roads.

Question 4

What paperwork should a seller in the Bas-Rhin hand over?

Accepted Answer

The carte grise crossed through and signed, a certificat de cession and a recent certificat de situation administrative showing the car is not pledged. A car over four years old also needs a contrôle technique carried out less than six months before the sale.
