What is the difference between the Volkswagen up! and the Polo?

The up! is a shorter city car with a three-cylinder 1.0 engine and a small boot. The Polo sits a class above, with more rear space and TSI and TDI engines happy on the motorway.

Is the ASG gearbox in the Volkswagen up! reliable?

It is durable, but the ASG is a single-clutch automated manual with slow, jerky shifts. Anyone wanting a smooth automatic should look for a Polo DSG or the electric e-up!.

Which Volkswagen Polo generation should I buy used?

The Polo from 2017 on (AW) is bigger, safer and has updated 1.0 engines. The previous Polo (6R, 2009 to 2017) is cheaper; on 1.2 TSI versions built before 2014, check the condition of the timing chain.
