Question 1

Should I worry about the emissions recall on an older Volkswagen TDI?

Accepted Answer

The 1.6 and 2.0 TDI engines of the EA189 family, fitted until about 2015, were recalled for a software update, and the 1.6 also received a small part in the air intake. Ask the seller or a Volkswagen workshop to confirm the work was done on that particular car.

Question 2

What is the weak point of Volkswagen's DSG gearbox?

Accepted Answer

The seven-speed DSG with dry clutches, used with smaller petrol and diesel engines, can judder when pulling away and its mechatronic unit may fail. On a test drive, creep forward as if in traffic and reverse up a slope; any shudder or hesitation is a warning sign.

Question 3

Is the Volkswagen T-Roc built in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the T-Roc has been built at the Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, south of Lisbon, since 2017. A T-Roc first sold new in Portugal has its whole history here, whereas an imported one must have paid ISV before registration.

Question 4

Why check the underbody of a car from Aveiro?

Accepted Answer

Salt air from the ria and the Atlantic speeds up corrosion on brake lines, subframes and sills, especially on cars parked outdoors near Barra or Costa Nova. A look on a lift before paying is cheap insurance.

Question 5

How do I register a used Volkswagen in my name?

Accepted Answer

The transfer of ownership is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, online or in person, on a request signed by buyer and seller. Dealers usually handle it; in a private sale, agree beforehand who submits it and pays the fee.
