Question 1

What should I check on a used Volkswagen TDI?

Accepted Answer

Diesels with the EA189 engine, sold up to about 2015, were recalled for an emissions software update, so ask for proof it was done. On any TDI, check when the timing belt was changed and whether the particulate filter has been able to regenerate, which a diet of short trips prevents.

Question 2

Are Volkswagen DSG gearboxes reliable?

Accepted Answer

The wet-clutch DSG paired with larger engines is robust if its oil has been changed on schedule. The seven-speed dry-clutch version on smaller engines can judder or hesitate in stop-start traffic, so test it slowly in a queue and on a hill before buying.

Question 3

Is the Volkswagen T-Roc made in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the T-Roc is built at the Autoeuropa plant in Palmela, in the Setúbal district, which earlier produced models such as the Sharan and the Scirocco. That makes it a familiar sight on the Portuguese used market.

Question 4

Can an older Volkswagen drive into central Lisbon?

Accepted Answer

Lisbon has a reduced-emissions zone in the Baixa and along the Avenida da Liberdade, where the oldest cars face weekday restrictions according to their emissions standard. If you will drive there often, check the council's current rules against the car's Euro standard.

Question 5

What does an electric Volkswagen ID.3 or ID.4 cost to run in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Fully electric cars are exempt from IUC and were registered without ISV, which keeps fixed costs low. Check the battery's state of health and whether charging at home or work is possible, as it often is not in Lisbon's older apartment buildings.
