Question 1

Is a high-mileage Volkswagen TDI a bad buy?

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily. Motorway kilometres are gentle on a diesel, while repeated short trips stop the particulate filter from regenerating and can lead to costly repairs. Look for a timing belt change on schedule and, on EA189 engines sold up to about 2015, proof of the emissions recall.

Question 2

What should I check on a Volkswagen DSG gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Wet-clutch DSG gearboxes need oil changes at set intervals, so look for them in the service record. The seven-speed dry-clutch DSG on smaller engines is more prone to judder, which shows when creeping in traffic or pulling away uphill.

Question 3

Is an imported used Volkswagen worth it?

Accepted Answer

Many used Volkswagens in Portugal came from Germany and other EU countries. An import pays ISV on registration, based on engine size and CO2 with a reduction for age, so compare the final registered price with a car already on Portuguese plates.

Question 4

Where can I charge an electric ID model in Porto?

Accepted Answer

Portugal's public charging network is Mobi.E, with chargers across the Porto district, but charging at home or work makes an electric car far cheaper to run. Electric cars pay no IUC, and a battery health report is the key document when buying one used.

Question 5

What paperwork does a used Volkswagen need in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

The sale is registered at the Registo Automóvel, online or at a registry office, and the car must have a valid IPO. A dealer normally handles the transfer; in a private sale buyer and seller sign the request together.
