Does the manual Volkswagen Golf have clutch problems?

It is not a general fault, but on diesel Golfs the dual-mass flywheel and clutch wear faster with heavy town use. Judder when pulling away or a rattle at idle means an expensive replacement is close.

How many gears does a manual Volkswagen have?

Recent Volkswagens use five- or six-speed manual gearboxes, depending on engine and power. The stronger versions and the TDIs usually have six, which lowers revs on the motorway.

Is a manual Volkswagen cheaper to run than a DSG?

Usually, yes: a manual avoids DSG oil changes and the mechatronic repairs some seven-speed dry-clutch DSG boxes needed. The clutch is the main foreseeable cost.
