Is the Skoda 1.0 TSI engine reliable?

Yes, the 1.0 TSI has a good record and uses a timing belt with a long replacement interval. Check that oil changes used the specified oil, as the turbo is sensitive to it.

What problems does the older Skoda 1.2 TSI have?

On the early chain-driven versions, wear of the timing chain and tensioner is the best-known fault. A metallic rattle on a cold start is the sign to listen for; later versions switched to a belt.

Is a petrol Skoda better than a diesel Skoda?

For short and urban trips, yes: a TSI has no diesel particulate filter to regenerate and no AdBlue. For high motorway mileage, a TDI still uses less fuel.
