Question 1

Which automatic gearbox does a Skoda have?

Accepted Answer

Most have a DSG twin-clutch gearbox, either the seven-speed dry-clutch type on smaller petrol engines or a wet-clutch type on diesels and more powerful versions. The electric Enyaq has a single-speed transmission and no gearbox to wear in the usual sense.

Question 2

What should I check on a used Skoda DSG gearbox?

Accepted Answer

Drive it from cold, in slow traffic and on a hill: judder, jerky starts, clunks or a flashing gear indicator are warning signs. The wet-clutch versions need gearbox oil changes on schedule, so ask for proof they were done.

Question 3

Does an automatic gearbox change the IUC?

Accepted Answer

Not directly. For recent cars the IUC is based on engine displacement and CO2 emissions, so it only differs when the automatic version has a different official CO2 figure.

Question 4

Is an automatic Skoda expensive to keep?

Accepted Answer

Day-to-day running costs are close to a manual's, as modern DSGs are economical. The risk lies in repairs to the clutch pack or mechatronic unit, which is why a car with a documented service history is worth paying more for.
