Question 1

Which automatic gearboxes does Renault use?

Accepted Answer

Recent petrol and diesel Renaults use the EDC dual-clutch gearbox. E-Tech hybrids have their own multi-mode gearbox without a clutch, and electric Renaults a single fixed ratio. Older models such as early Clio and Mégane automatics used a conventional four-speed unit.

Question 2

Is the Renault EDC gearbox a weak point?

Accepted Answer

The EDC is generally sound but should shift smoothly and pull away without judder. Jerky starts or hesitation in slow traffic can mean worn clutches or out-of-date software, so test it from a standstill and ask about past work.

Question 3

How does a Renault E-Tech hybrid drive?

Accepted Answer

It starts on electric power and switches between electric, petrol and combined drive by itself. Gear changes can feel unusual compared with a conventional automatic; a long test drive tells you whether you like it.

Question 4

Should I avoid an older four-speed Renault automatic?

Accepted Answer

Approach it with care. The old four-speed automatic fitted to earlier Clio, Mégane and Scénic models has a poor reputation for reliability, so look for smooth changes, no slipping and evidence of oil changes.

Question 5

Does an electric Renault count as an automatic?

Accepted Answer

In practice, yes: a Zoe, Mégane E-Tech Electric or Renault 5 has no gears to change and drives like an automatic. Being fully electric, it also pays no IUC in Portugal.
