Question 1

What should I check on an imported Mercedes-Benz?

Accepted Answer

A car brought into Portugal must pay ISV and receive Portuguese registration before it can be put in your name at the Registo Automóvel. When a dealer quotes a price, ask whether ISV and registration costs are included. The mileage can be compared with the digital service history.

Question 2

What do 'e' and 'de' mean on a Mercedes badge?

Accepted Answer

An 'e' marks a petrol plug-in hybrid, such as the C 300 e, and 'de' a diesel plug-in hybrid, such as the E 300 de. Both need regular charging to deliver their low fuel consumption. Check that the charging cable comes with the car and that the battery charges fully.

Question 3

Does the Mercedes A 180 d have a Renault engine?

Accepted Answer

Many A 180 d, B 180 d and CLA 180 d models use a 1.5-litre diesel derived from a Renault engine, while the larger diesels are Mercedes' own 2.0-litre units. The smaller engine is economical but has less pulling power with a full load.

Question 4

Do electric Mercedes-Benz models pay IUC in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Fully electric models such as the EQA, EQB and EQE pay no IUC and no ISV. Check the battery's state of health and how much of the battery warranty remains, as it runs by years and kilometres.
