Question 1

What should I check on a car kept near the coast around Setúbal?

Accepted Answer

Salt air from the Sado, Tróia, Sesimbra and the Costa da Caparica speeds up rust. Look at the underbody, brake discs, exhaust and the bottoms of the doors, and check the cabin and boot for damp.

Question 2

Should high mileage from the Setúbal–Lisbon commute worry me?

Accepted Answer

Many cars from the south bank cross a bridge into Lisbon every day, so they gather kilometres quickly. Steady motorway driving is gentle on an engine, but the queues on the bridge approaches wear the clutch and brakes, so judge those as well as the odometer.

Question 3

How is ownership transferred for a car bought in Setúbal?

Accepted Answer

The transfer is recorded at the Registo Automóvel, the national register, online or at any registry office, so it works the same anywhere in Portugal. The new owner then pays the annual IUC in the month the car was first registered.

Question 4

When does a car bought in Setúbal need its IPO?

Accepted Answer

The first periodic inspection is due four years after first registration, then every two years until the car is eight, and every year after that. It can be done at any approved centre, in the district or elsewhere, and the latest report is worth asking to see.
