Question 1

How can I tell if a Mercedes was a taxi or TVDE car?

Accepted Answer

Very high mileage for its age, a company as previous owner and worn rear seats or door handles are the usual signs. Former taxis may also show where the roof sign and meter were fitted. Ask the seller directly; a certificate from the Registo Automóvel lists the previous owners.

Question 2

What changes when buying a Mercedes Vito or Sprinter?

Accepted Answer

Vans are usually registered as light goods vehicles, with their own IUC category and an IPO calendar different from passenger cars. Check the category on the registration certificate, and on a former work van look closely at the load floor, the sliding door and the clutch.

Question 3

Does a Mercedes from the Porto coast need extra checks?

Accepted Answer

Cars kept for years near the sea in Matosinhos, Vila do Conde or Póvoa de Varzim are more exposed to salt air. Look at the underbody, brake lines, exhaust and subframes for corrosion before agreeing a price.

Question 4

Where do I pay the IUC for a Mercedes bought in Porto?

Accepted Answer

The IUC is paid online to the tax authority every year, in the month the car was first registered, wherever you live in Portugal. Its amount depends on engine size and CO2 emissions, with an additional charge for diesels.
