Question 1

What should I check on an imported Mercedes-Benz?

Accepted Answer

An imported car must have paid ISV and been given Portuguese registration before it can be registered in your name at the Registo Automóvel. Ask for the Portuguese registration certificate and, for a recent import, the DAV customs declaration showing the ISV paid.

Question 2

Is a used plug-in hybrid Mercedes worth buying?

Accepted Answer

It suits drivers who can charge at home or at work, since the electric range covers many daily trips around Lisbon. Check that the charging cable is present, that the car charges normally and what electric range it shows at full charge.

Question 3

What is AdBlue on a Mercedes diesel?

Accepted Answer

Recent Mercedes diesels inject AdBlue into the exhaust to cut nitrogen oxide emissions, from a tank you top up separately. A warning from the AdBlue system or a tank left empty can stop the engine from restarting, so make sure no fault is showing.

Question 4

How much IUC does a Mercedes pay?

Accepted Answer

For cars first registered from July 2007, the IUC depends on engine size and CO2 emissions, so a large E-Class or GLC diesel pays noticeably more than an A-Class. Diesels also pay an additional charge. The tax authority's simulator gives the exact figure for a given car.

Question 5

Can I see a Mercedes' service history?

Accepted Answer

Recent Mercedes-Benz cars have a digital service record that an official workshop can look up with the VIN. Ask for it alongside any paper invoices, especially on cars with an automatic gearbox and air suspension.
