Question 1

Which size of Mercedes-Benz SUV suits me?

Accepted Answer

The GLA and GLB are compact and easy in town, and the GLB can be ordered with a third row of seats. The GLC is the mid-size family choice, while the GLE and GLS are large cars that need more space and cost more to run.

Question 2

Do I need 4MATIC all-wheel drive on a Mercedes-Benz SUV in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

For most driving, on motorways and in towns, front- or rear-wheel drive is enough. 4MATIC helps on wet mountain roads, gravel tracks and when towing, but adds weight and a little fuel consumption.

Question 3

What should I check on a Mercedes GLE or GLS with air suspension?

Accepted Answer

Cars with the optional AIRMATIC air suspension should sit level after standing overnight and rise and lower smoothly through the height settings. One sagging corner can mean a strut or compressor, and either is an expensive repair.

Question 4

How are Mercedes-Benz SUVs taxed in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

ISV on first registration or import, and the annual IUC for cars registered since July 2007, both depend on engine size and CO2 emissions, so large diesel and petrol SUVs pay the most. Fully electric EQ models are exempt from both.

Question 5

What should I check on a plug-in hybrid Mercedes GLC or GLE?

Accepted Answer

Make sure the charging cable comes with the car and that the electric range shown when fully charged is reasonable for its age. A plug-in hybrid that is never charged carries a heavy battery for little benefit.
