Question 1

Do electric BMWs pay IUC in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

No. Battery-electric cars are exempt from IUC, the annual road tax, and from ISV, paid when a car is first registered or imported. The periodic IPO inspection still applies as to any other car.

Question 2

How do I check the battery of a used BMW i3 or i4?

Accepted Answer

Ask a BMW workshop or an independent diagnostic for a state-of-health reading of the high-voltage battery. Compare the range on a full charge with what the car offered when new, remembering that cold weather and motorway speeds lower it.

Question 3

Is the battery warranty still valid on a second-hand BMW?

Accepted Answer

The high-voltage battery is covered for longer than the rest of the car, commonly eight years with a mileage cap, and the cover passes to the next owner. The date of first registration shows how much of it remains.

Question 4

What is the BMW i3 REx?

Accepted Answer

It is an i3 fitted with a small petrol engine that only charges the battery, stretching the range when it runs low. Confirm which version you are looking at, since the range extender needs servicing of its own.

Question 5

Where can I charge an electric BMW in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

At home, a wallbox is the cheapest and most practical way to charge. Away from home, the public Mobi.E network covers the country, reached with a card or app from an electricity provider.
