Question 1

What should I check on a BMW kept near the Ria de Aveiro?

Accepted Answer

Humid, salty air around the lagoon and the beaches at Barra and Costa Nova speeds up corrosion. Look at the subframes, brake discs, exhaust and the bottoms of the doors, and check the boot floor for damp.

Question 2

Which BMW diesel has a known weak point?

Accepted Answer

The N47 four-cylinder diesel, fitted from about 2007 to 2011 to models such as the 118d, 320d and 520d, is known for timing chain wear. A rattle from the back of the engine, on the gearbox side, is the warning sign, and the repair is expensive because the chain sits there.

Question 3

Does a BMW come with a spare wheel?

Accepted Answer

Many BMWs run on run-flat tyres and carry no spare, relying on the tyre to keep going after a puncture. If the car now wears ordinary tyres, make sure a repair kit is on board; on run-flats, expect a firmer ride over rough roads.

Question 4

Does a diesel BMW pay more IUC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. In Portugal a diesel car pays an additional IUC charge on top of the amount set by engine size and CO2. A 330e or another plug-in hybrid usually pays less thanks to its low official emissions, and the electric i models pay none.
