Question 1

What does the e mean on a BMW such as the 330e?

Accepted Answer

It marks a plug-in hybrid: a petrol engine paired with an electric motor and a battery charged from the mains. On the SUVs the same idea appears as xDrive25e, xDrive30e or xDrive45e.

Question 2

Why do the previous owner's charging habits matter on a plug-in BMW?

Accepted Answer

A plug-in hybrid saves fuel only when it is charged regularly. One driven mostly on petrol has carried a heavy battery for little benefit, so ask how often it was plugged in and check that its charging cable comes with it.

Question 3

Does a hybrid BMW pay IUC in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Only battery-electric cars are exempt from IUC; a hybrid pays it like a combustion car, according to its engine size and CO2 emissions. The amount varies from car to car.

Question 4

Does an imported hybrid BMW pay less ISV?

Accepted Answer

Hybrids and plug-in hybrids can get a reduced ISV, but only when conditions on electric range and CO2 emissions are met. Check that the specific car qualifies before counting on it in the price.
