Question 1

Is a petrol BMW cheaper to tax than a diesel in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

For cars registered from July 2007, the IUC is based on engine size and CO2 emissions, and diesels pay an additional charge on top. A petrol BMW of similar size and emissions therefore usually costs less in IUC each year.

Question 2

Which petrol engines need the most care?

Accepted Answer

Some four-cylinder turbo engines from the early 2010s are known for timing chain guide wear, heard as a rattle on a cold start. Across many BMW petrol engines, oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets are common and worth checking.

Question 3

Petrol or diesel for a BMW used mainly in town?

Accepted Answer

Petrol is usually the better match for short trips, since a diesel's particulate filter needs regular longer runs to regenerate. For high annual mileage on motorways a diesel uses less fuel, so it comes down to how you drive.

Question 4

Are petrol BMWs thirstier than diesels?

Accepted Answer

Yes, at the same power a petrol engine generally uses more fuel, especially on long motorway runs. The gap narrows in town, and the lower IUC offsets part of it.
