Question 1

Is a diesel BMW still a sensible buy around Leiria?

Accepted Answer

For drivers who cover long distances on the A1, A8 or A17, a diesel 320d, 520d or X1 remains economical. For mostly short trips around town, a petrol or plug-in hybrid avoids the soot build-up that clogs a diesel particulate filter.

Question 2

What should I check on an imported BMW?

Accepted Answer

Ask for proof that the ISV was paid and that the car carries Portuguese plates registered at the Registo Automóvel. The registration should be in the name of the seller or the dealer selling it.

Question 3

Which BMW engine has a known weak point?

Accepted Answer

The N47 two-litre diesel, fitted to many BMWs from about 2007 to 2014, is known for timing-chain wear. A rattle from the gearbox end of the engine at idle is the warning sign, and records of a chain replacement are reassuring.

Question 4

Does the age of a BMW change its IUC?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Cars registered before July 2007 pay IUC on engine size and age, which usually comes out much lower, while later ones also pay on CO2 emissions. A recent BMW with a large engine therefore carries a noticeably higher annual bill.
