Question 1

Should a BMW convertible have a soft top or a folding hard top?

Accepted Answer

A metal roof is quieter and more secure, but it is heavier and takes up most of the boot when folded. A fabric hood folds faster, weighs less and leaves more luggage space, though it needs cleaning and proofing to stay watertight.

Question 2

How do I check the roof mechanism on a used BMW convertible?

Accepted Answer

Open and close it several times with the engine running, watching for pauses, uneven movement or warning messages. Then look for water stains on the headlining and damp carpets, which point to tired seals or blocked drain channels.

Question 3

Does the Portuguese sun harm a BMW convertible?

Accepted Answer

Strong sun fades and dries a fabric hood and makes rubber seals brittle over time, and it cracks leather seats left uncovered. A car kept in a garage or under cover usually shows it in the condition of its roof.

Question 4

Can a BMW cabrio be used all year in Portugal?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with the roof up it is an ordinary car, and mild winters along much of the coast leave plenty of days for driving with it down. Four-seat models keep small rear seats, while the Z4 is strictly a two-seater.
