Question 1

Does every SUV have four-wheel drive?

Accepted Answer

No. Many compact and mid-size SUVs are front-wheel drive only, and four-wheel drive is usually a separate version with its own badge, such as 4x4, AWD or a maker's own name. Check it if you tow, live in the mountains or drive on unmade roads.

Question 2

Which Crit'Air sticker will a used SUV get?

Accepted Answer

Electric SUVs get Crit'Air 0, and petrol or hybrid ones meeting Euro 5 or 6 get Crit'Air 1. Euro 5 and 6 diesels get Crit'Air 2 and older engines a higher number, which counts in the low-emission zones (ZFE) of large cities.

Question 3

Does a used SUV pay the malus?

Accepted Answer

A car already registered in France pays no malus again when it changes hands. An SUV imported from abroad and registered in France for the first time can owe the CO2 malus and the weight-based malus, both reduced according to the car's age.

Question 4

Is a used plug-in hybrid SUV worth it?

Accepted Answer

Only if you can charge it regularly: driven mostly on petrol, it carries a heavy battery for little gain. Ask how the previous owner used it and make sure the charging cable comes with the car.
