Question 1

Is a right-hand-drive car worth buying in the Dordogne?

Accepted Answer

It can be driven legally in France once it is registered with a French carte grise, which requires headlights suited to driving on the right. Overtaking is awkward and resale is harder, so the price should reflect it.

Question 2

What does a carte grise cost in the Dordogne?

Accepted Answer

The regional tax is set per fiscal horsepower by Nouvelle-Aquitaine and is the same across the department, with fixed national fees on top. The total therefore depends on the fiscal horsepower printed on the carte grise.

Question 3

Which roads cross the Dordogne?

Accepted Answer

The tolled A89 motorway runs west to east past Périgueux, linking Bordeaux with Brive and Clermont-Ferrand. The N21 connects Périgueux with Bergerac to the south and Limoges to the north.

Question 4

What should I check on a car used on Dordogne back roads?

Accepted Answer

Steep valley roads and narrow lanes wear brakes and clutches, and verges and potholes take their toll on tyres, wheels and suspension. A test drive with a hill start and a long descent shows a lot.
