Question 1

Is a Cupra just a SEAT?

Accepted Answer

Cupra became a separate brand in 2018 after years as SEAT's performance label, and it shares platforms and engines with SEAT and the wider Volkswagen group. The Formentor, Born, Tavascan and Terramar were launched as Cupra models only, with no SEAT equivalent.

Question 2

What should I check on a Cupra e-Hybrid?

Accepted Answer

The Leon, Formentor and Terramar e-Hybrid pair a turbo petrol engine with a battery charged from the mains. Ask what electric range the car manages on a full charge today, and make sure its charging cable is included.

Question 3

What should I know about the DSG gearbox in a Cupra?

Accepted Answer

Most automatic Cupras use a DSG dual-clutch gearbox, which should pull away smoothly without judder or clunks. Ask whether its oil has been changed at the interval the maker sets, since the wet-clutch versions depend on it.

Question 4

Does an imported Cupra pay the malus?

Accepted Answer

A used car registered in France for the first time pays the CO2 malus, reduced according to its age, so a powerful petrol Cupra from another country can be costly to register. A car already on French plates does not pay it again; e-Hybrid versions carry Crit'Air 1 and the Born and Tavascan the green sticker.
