Does BMW still sell new cars with a manual gearbox in France?

Very few: most current BMW models come only with an automatic gearbox. A used manual BMW is therefore usually a generation or two old, or a sporty M model.

What should I check on a used manual BMW diesel?

Listen for rattles at idle and judder when pulling away, the usual signs of a worn dual-mass flywheel and clutch. Replacing both is a sizeable bill, so ask whether it has already been done.

What paperwork comes with a used BMW bought in France?

The seller hands over the certificat d'immatriculation (carte grise), signed and marked as sold. For a car over four years old, a contrôle technique less than six months old is also required.
