What is the timing chain problem on BMW diesel saloons?

The N47 2.0 diesel, fitted to many 3 Series and 5 Series saloons from about 2007 to 2014, could wear its timing chain, which sits at the back of the engine. Listen for a whine or rattle and ask for proof of replacement.

What is the difference between a BMW 3 Series and 5 Series saloon?

The 5 Series is longer, with more rear legroom and a bigger boot; the 3 Series is lighter and more agile. In recent generations they share engines and the eight-speed automatic.

Can a diesel BMW saloon enter low-emission zones in France?

It depends on the Crit'Air sticker: a Euro 6 diesel BMW gets Crit'Air 2, a Euro 4 one Crit'Air 3. Each city with a ZFE sets which stickers it admits, so check the class before buying.
