Question 1

Does a BMW automatic gearbox need an oil change?

Accepted Answer

BMW describes the fluid in the ZF eight-speed as lifetime, but ZF publishes its own change intervals, and many specialists replace it on high-mileage cars. Ask whether it has been done and look for the invoice.

Question 2

What is BMW Steptronic?

Accepted Answer

Steptronic is BMW's name for its automatic gearboxes with a manual mode, worked by the lever or, on Steptronic Sport versions, by paddles behind the wheel. It covers both the torque-converter automatics and the dual-clutch gearboxes of front-drive models.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does an automatic BMW get?

Accepted Answer

The gearbox makes no difference: fuel and Euro standard decide. Petrol and plug-in hybrid BMWs meeting Euro 5 or 6 get Crit'Air 1, diesels of the same standards Crit'Air 2.

Question 4

How should I test a used automatic BMW?

Accepted Answer

Start it from cold and watch for harsh or delayed shifts, especially from first to second and when slowing to a stop. A jolt on selecting drive or reverse can point to old fluid or a tired mechatronic unit.
