Question 1

What is the difference between sDrive and xDrive on the BMW X1?

Accepted Answer

xDrive is BMW's all-wheel drive, while sDrive drives only two wheels: the rear ones on the first X1, the front ones from the second generation onwards. sDrive versions are lighter and usually use a little less fuel.

Question 2

Is the timing chain a known issue on the BMW X1?

Accepted Answer

The N47 diesel fitted to many first-generation X1s is known for timing chain wear, heard as a rattle from the gearbox end of the engine. Ask whether the chain has been replaced, and favour cars with a documented BMW service history.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does a used BMW X1 diesel get?

Accepted Answer

Most X1 diesels meet Euro 5 or Euro 6 and therefore receive Crit'Air 2. Petrol and plug-in hybrid versions built to those standards get Crit'Air 1.

Question 4

Does a used BMW X1 need a recent contrôle technique?

Accepted Answer

Yes: if the car is over four years old, the seller must provide a contrôle technique report less than six months old. It lists any defects the next owner will have to fix, and the mileage recorded at each test helps confirm the odometer.
