Question 1

Is a diesel still a sensible choice in the Ardennes?

Accepted Answer

For long daily distances on rural roads, a diesel remains economical. If you often drive into larger cities, check the Crit'Air class, since older diesels are the first to be restricted there.

Question 2

What should I check after an Ardennes winter?

Accepted Answer

Frost, fog and salted roads are hard on batteries, wipers and underbodies. Look underneath for corrosion on brake lines and exhaust, and ask whether the car comes with winter tyres, which are worth having on the plateau.

Question 3

How do I spot an Ardennes car that has hit an animal?

Accepted Answer

Collisions with deer and wild boar are frequent on forest roads. Uneven panel gaps at the front, a replaced bumper or bonnet, or new headlights on an older car are reasons to ask for the repair invoice.

Question 4

Can I buy a used car in Belgium and register it in the Ardennes?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You need the Belgian registration certificate, a certificate of conformity and a quitus fiscal from the French tax office before applying to the ANTS for a carte grise. Belgian plates stay with their owner, so arrange transit plates to drive the car home.
