Question 1

Which Leon generation should I look at?

Accepted Answer

The third generation (2012–2020) uses the Golf 7's mechanicals and keeps physical buttons for the climate controls. The fourth, from 2020, adds mild-hybrid and plug-in versions, but moves most controls onto touch screens and sliders.

Question 2

Leon hatchback or estate?

Accepted Answer

The estate, called ST on the third generation and Sportstourer on the fourth, has a markedly larger boot for the same running gear. The hatchback came with five doors, and with three as the SC on the third generation.

Question 3

Which Crit'Air sticker does a Leon get?

Accepted Answer

Petrol and plug-in hybrid Leons from Euro 5 onwards get Crit'Air 1, diesels from Euro 5 onwards Crit'Air 2. Second-generation cars built to Euro 4 drop to Crit'Air 2 for petrol and 3 for diesel.

Question 4

What should I check on an older diesel Leon?

Accepted Answer

TDI engines from roughly 2009 to 2015 were covered by the Volkswagen group's emissions recall, so ask for proof the software update was done. A car that mostly did short trips may have a clogged particulate filter.
