Is a petrol VW Polo better than a diesel?

For short trips and town driving, usually yes: a petrol Polo avoids the particulate filter problems of a diesel used mostly in town. A TDI only pays off over high annual mileage.

What is the difference between the VW Polo MPI and TSI?

The MPI is a naturally aspirated engine without a turbo, simple but slow. The TSI is turbocharged and direct-injected, giving more pull at low revs and better economy on the open road.

Which generations of VW Polo GTI can I find used?

The 6R GTI used a 1.4 TSI with a seven-speed DSG, the 6C a 1.8 TSI with a manual option, and the AW GTI a 2.0 TSI with DSG. Check the DSG's service history on any of them.
